Identifying these “triggers” is crucial for understanding how they affect us. Once we recognize them, we can evaluate our reactions and learn how to initiate change. In StressWorks II, an exercise was provided to help you evaluate these triggers and your responses to them.
The Cycle of Reactivity
- Triggers and Reactions: Certain triggers provoke specific feelings and responses.
- Fight or Flight: Your reaction is based on these feelings—you might confront the situation (fight) or withdraw from it (flight).
- Emerging Patterns: As you assess these triggers and responses, patterns of reactivity may become evident.
- Breaking Free: You can shift from the Cycle of Reactivity to the Cycle of Creativity.
Steps to Recognizing Reactivity
- Notice if you’re reacting to similar triggers, even in different circumstances.
- Evaluate your reactions.
- Consider if you can influence or change the situation you’re reacting to.
